The Whitby Wolves overcame a penalty-riddled first period and a strong start from the Bluewater Hawks to secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory. The game was defined by special teams and a physical edge, with the Hawks striking first on the power play. Just over five minutes into the opening frame, Jamie Ryall, assisted by Olivia Minten and Payton Biser, capitalized on a man-advantage to give Bluewater a 1-0 lead. The Wolves were their own worst enemy early, taking five minor penalties in the first period alone, including a head contact call on Neve Murphy and a bench minor. Despite being outshot 12-6 in the period, Whitby managed to survive the onslaught and keep the deficit to one.
The momentum began to shift in the second period as Whitby found their rhythm. Late in the frame, with just 19 seconds remaining, Katie Belk finally solved the Hawks' defense, scoring an even-strength goal with helpers from Haedyn Leeson and Kali Maechtel to tie the game at 1-1. The Wolves carried that energy into the third, where Belk struck again, netting her second of the game just over six minutes in, with Maechtel and Leeson picking up their second assists each. The Hawks responded with urgency, as Abigayle Van Bakel answered just 23 seconds later, assisted by Jordan Phillips and Maggie Alcock, to knot the game at 2-2 and set up a frantic finish.
The deadlock was broken for good with under seven minutes to play, as the Wolves found the game-winner. The final minutes were not without controversy, as a slashing penalty to Maeve Aird with just over two minutes left in regulation gave the Hawks a late power play chance. The Wolves' bench then took a critical bench minor with 19 seconds remaining, putting Bluewater on a 6-on-4 advantage. The situation escalated when a staff member, Lauren Beaulieu, received a 10-minute misconduct and a suspension for disrespectful and abusive behaviour. Despite the chaotic finish, the Whitby defense and goaltender Sarah McKechnie, who faced 23 total shots, held firm through the final seconds to preserve the 3-2 win. The Wolves' penalty kill, tested early and often, was ultimately the difference in a gritty road victory.
