The Whitby Wolves secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the East Ottawa Stars in a U22 Elite clash defined by special teams and a late-game heroics. The game's physical tone was set early, with Whitby's Whitney Basso and East Ottawa's Macyn Driver getting tangled up for matching minors just five and a half minutes into the first period. Both goalies, Sadie Davidson for Whitby and Anna Rioux for East Ottawa, were sharp from the outset, turning away all first-period chances to keep the game scoreless. The Wolves began to tilt the ice in the second, outshooting the Stars 13-6, and their pressure finally paid off on the power play. With just over a minute left in a penalty to East Ottawa's Genevieve Bisson, Whitney Basso redeemed her earlier penalty by firing home a power-play marker, assisted by Macy Murray and Haedyn Leeson, to give Whitby a 1-0 lead heading into the final frame.
The East Ottawa Stars fought back valiantly in the third. Midway through the period, Cayleigh Bowes broke through for the equalizer, converting a setup from Kessa Hogue and Macyn Driver to knot the game at 1-1 and swing the momentum. The period became increasingly chippy, with a flurry of penalties in the final minutes. With the Wolves' Kali Maechtel in the box for head contact and just 49 seconds remaining on the clock, Whitby's Riley Pettit delivered the dagger. Shorthanded and against the flow, Pettit found the back of the net, assisted by Maechtel, to stun the Stars and reclaim the lead.
The final 23 seconds descended into chaos, with three separate roughing minors handed out, but the Wolves held firm. Whitby goaltender Sadie Davidson was a wall, stopping 19 of 20 shots to backstop the win, while East Ottawa's Anna Rioux was brilliant in a losing effort, making 37 saves to keep her team in it until the very end. The Wolves' ability to score both on the power play and shorthanded proved to be the ultimate difference in this tightly contested defensive struggle.
